A Genealogy High

By Daniel LIPPITT

While doing genealogy work I was having trouble with the “Johns” in my paternal family line, because we have 5 Johns all in a row. The first John I, the original John was initially recorded in 1638 in Providence RI, as one of the original 52 home lot owners. One problem was with John IV and his son John V. I was able to find information about John V, but I was wondering if his father John IV had emigrated to Massachusetts with his son. Unable to find a record of his death or burial, I set out on a genealogy road trip in June of 2024, to hunt. I made my way to Adams in Berkshire County Massachusetts, to check out a private cemetery, Bowens Corners Cemetery, located on the original property of John V. I found that cemetery and saw there the tombstones of John V and his wife Mary (Aldrich) LIPPITT. Right behind those two headstones was a smaller headstone with only the name J Lippitt. With that, I knew that indeed John V's father, John IV did emigrate with him to Adams MA and died there.

Just finding these headstones was a heartwarming experience for me and I felt a kinship to these people and the place that I had no idea I would feel. I was hoping that this feeling would come to me the same as it had while visiting other cemeteries closer to me, in Wisconsin, and I was not disappointed. These findings are ancestral connections that become one of the primary joys I experience from doing genealogy work.
